WASHBASINS WITH HISTORY
The antique mirror washbasin "Kollow" reveals its secret
The private sellers of the “Kollow” washbasin were particularly friendly to us on the phone. They had probably read an article about our washbasin manufacturer and then offered us this treasure to refurbish and rework. We chatted on site and were thrilled by the couple's magical connection after 30 years together. Does the mirrored dresser tell us the secret of such a happy partnership :-)?
We were surprised by a wonderful text a few days after the meeting: Mr. Rudolf Z. sent us the story of the unique piece in a very poetic way:
Country house mirror washbasin "Kollow"

" The old mirror dresser
It must have been around 1979/80, a whopping 35 years ago. Jürgen S., a fellow rider (and a very nice guy at that) invited me to visit him at his new residence in Kollow, near Geesthacht. He had moved there from Reinbek to the house of a horse breeder friend of his. Because where does a rider go? Well, definitely get close to these four-legged friends. And if you then get the chance to find your place of residence directly at its “place of origin”: heart, what more could you want! So, off to Kollow! The day there was beautiful, the weather and food were good, the conversations were lively, the horses right next door were wonderful, the hippological specialist discussions were lively and engaging - a well-rounded affair. At some point we came to the topic of “furniture”. I don't know why, it doesn't matter. In any case, Jürgen suddenly looked at me very pensively and said: “Well, I've thought of something, come with me.” And he led me into the attic of the rural property. There, in a horrible and absolutely tasteless, cloudy lacquer moiré, stood a number of pieces of furniture, some whole, some disassembled. But a closer look immediately revealed that they were beautiful pieces, but whose charm seemed to have eluded the sensibilities of their previous owners. So: The farm owner felt no pain of saying goodbye, my interest was highly piqued, the values of both sides met on a fair level and the transport was carried out using my horse trailer. For the softwood furniture - a large two-door cupboard, a bedside table and this mirrored chest of drawers with its beautiful old Art Nouveau tiles - it was called: New home!
Stripping the good pieces myself would have overwhelmed my skills and time, so I had that done at a stripping company in Altona. But then I devoted myself to further work with enthusiasm and desire: removing paint residues in the corners and joints, sanding, waxing. And from then on the new furniture was in my/our apartments, first in Wentorf and then in Reinbek. The chest of drawers is used alternately, in the hallway, in the living room and later in the dining room. At some point people's tastes, not least women's, change, and then one piece of furniture is replaced by another, something is moved from here to there and suddenly the overall picture is no longer correct. Long palaver, heated discussions, red heads and finally the decision to say goodbye. Of course only from the piece of furniture, not from my wife, nota bene!
That's how it was with the mirrored chest of drawers, which ultimately ended up with the Bleil siblings, who gave the sure impression that they were showing such wooden contemporaries the appropriate respect. And whoever gives this really good piece a new home should remember that furniture also has its history and something like a “soul”, albeit in a highly local and not in a transcendent sense."
Yes, they are unique pieces*! Each of our country house bathroom furniture has its own personal story, has seen, experienced, radiated and endured a lot - and we now want to breathe a whole new life into each one. So that the character pieces can experience their golden years in your home in the bathroom - for example as the "Kollow" mirror washbasin. Now you know why we named it that :-)
Addendum: The washbasin goes to a couple from Rösrath-Hoffnungsthal. If that's not coincidence! And again, by the way, it was a gentleman who fell in love with the chest of drawers and was then able to convince his lady of it.
*This excludes washbasins that are marked as “new” or “newly made,” which we now offer in response to numerous customer requests.
