The shabby chic look or style is characterized by the mixture of deliberately left "shabby" elements and "chic" refurbishment. Often, an entire piece of furniture is refurbished and then deliberately aged again by sanding the edges, sometimes even drilling fine holes with a woodworm effect.

Shabby chic furniture should retain its old character, signs of wear and tear should enhance the piece, new or old "damaged" colors should emphasize the historical character, the craftsmanship should be visible.

Shabby chic polarizes! You either find a piece shabby or chic! There's no arguing about taste.

A well-known example from jeans fashion: hardly anyone likes a new pair of unwashed jeans, while artificial fading increases their value and makes them "wearable" for most people. Jeans with rough signs of wear and tear, such as holes, are great for some people - for others they are already out of fashion. You shouldn't argue about taste. It's a matter of finding your own personal balance between shabby and chic.

We work with the following gradations here

1. without shabby traces, i.e. smoothly lacquered
2. subtly shabby - here the edges and ornaments are very delicately sanded. This makes a piece of furniture much easier to care for, as the usual traces of use that occur during use, e.g. when the vacuum cleaner hits it too hard, are not noticeable. However, the sanded areas are hardly noticeable and only slightly emphasize the shape of the washbasin
3. shabby - here the sanding marks are clearly visible, the piece of furniture has the clear "shabby chic character" that is typical of shabby chic furniture
