WASHBASINS WITH HISTORY

The antique mirror washbasin "Kollow" reveals its secret

The private sellers of the "Kollow" washstand were particularly sympathetic to us on the phone. They had probably read an article about our washstand manufacture and then offered us this treasure for refurbishment. We got chatting on site and were delighted with the couple's magical connection after 30 years together. Will the mirrored chest of drawers tell us the secret of such a happy partnership :-)?

We were surprised by a wonderful text a few days after the meeting: Mr. Rudolf Z. sent us a very poetically written story about the unique piece:

Country house mirror washbasin "Kollow"

"The old mirrored chest of drawers
It must have been around 1979/80, a good 35 years ago. Jürgen S., a fellow rider (and a very nice guy to boot) invited me to visit him at his new home in Kollow, near Geesthacht. He had moved there from Reinbek, to the house of a horse breeder friend of his. Because where does a rider go? Well, anywhere near these four-legged friends. And when you then get the chance to find your home right at their "place of origin": Heart, what more could you want! So, off to Kollow! The day there was beautiful, the weather and food good, the conversations lively, the horses right next door wonderful, the hippological discussions lively and engaging - a well-rounded affair. At some point, we got onto the subject of "furniture". I can't remember why, but it doesn't matter. In any case, Jürgen suddenly looked at me very pensively and said: "You, I've got an idea, why don't you come with me?" And he led me to the attic of the farmhouse. There, in gruesome and absolutely tasteless, dull lacquer moiré, were several pieces of furniture, some whole, some dismantled. But a closer look immediately revealed that these were beautiful pieces whose charm seemed to have eluded the sensibilities of their previous owners. So: the farmer owner felt no pain in parting, my interest was aroused to the highest degree, the values of both sides met at a fair level and the removal was carried out using my horse trailer. For the softwood furniture - a large two-door wardrobe, a bedside cabinet and this mirrored chest of drawers with its beautiful old Art Nouveau tiles - it was time for a new home!

Staining the good pieces myself would have been beyond my skills and time, so I had them done by a paint stripper in Altona. But then I devoted myself to the further work with zeal and enthusiasm: Removing paint residue in the corners and joints, sanding, waxing. And from then on, the new furniture was in my/our apartments, first in Wentorf and then in Reinbek. The chest of drawers was used in different places, in the hallway, in the living room and later in the dining room. At some point, people's tastes change, not least women's, and then one piece of furniture is replaced by another, something is moved from here to there and suddenly the overall picture is no longer right. Long palaver, heated discussions, red heads and finally the decision to say goodbye. Only from the furniture of course, not from my wife, nota bene!

That was the case with the mirrored chest of drawers, which eventually ended up with the Bleil siblings, who gave the impression that they would show such wooden contemporaries the appropriate respect. And whoever gives this really good piece a new home should bear in mind that furniture also has a history and something like a "soul", albeit in a highly local and not a transcendental sense."

Yes, they are unique pieces*! Each piece of our country house bathroom furniture has its own personal history, has seen, experienced, radiated and endured a lot - and we now want to breathe a whole new life into each one of them. So that these character pieces can experience their golden years in your bathroom at home - for example as the "Kollow" mirror washbasin. Now you know why we gave the piece its name :-)

Addendum: The washbasin went to a couple from Rösrath-Hoffnungsthal. If that's not a stroke of luck! And again, by the way, it was a gentleman who fell in love with the chest of drawers and was then able to convince his lady.

*This does not apply to washbasins marked as "new" or "newly carpentered", which we now also offer in response to many customer requests.
